The DAC at this point is not really important because all softwares were playing through the same chain so they are compared equally. Note: The song sample is one of my work in progress.

I also wonder if those differences would not simply be caused by the non-linearity of the DAC/Preamp at the input stage.Īnways, the files are below! Feel free to load them in your DAW and make your own observations or comments! The result of my tests demonstrates that the files almost completly null and the difference between them is so small and quiet that IMHO even golden ears would not hear any difference played at a normal volume. Quicktime versus WMP, WMP versus iTunes, etc. Then in Cubase, I flipped the phase of one file and compared against the other. The files are edited so they exactly match and start exactly at the same audio sample.

I recorded in Cubase the part of a song playing in QuickTime, then the same part playing in Windows Media Player and so on.

I used a MOTU 896 and recorded the output of this soundcard straight back into the DAW using high quality balanced cables (output 1-2 to input 1-2). So! I decided to make a comparison between the 3 players.

I was curious about it and I always make my own opinion by testing myself rather than believing what I read. I've heard many times from friend or other audio engineers that there was a sonic difference between iTunes, Quicktime and Windows Media Player even when settings are set properly (Sound Enhancement: off, Equalizer: off, etc).
